Periodontal
disease, gum disease, is a serious, dangerous infection that can lead
to tooth loss if left undiagnosed and untreated. Periodontal disease is
a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting
the teeth. Gum disease may only affect one tooth or multiple teeth.
The infection begins with the bacteria found in plaque and
ends up causing the gums to become inflamed. In the beginning stages of
gum disease the patient may notice red, swollen gums that may bleed
easily. There may be little or no discomfort.
If the disease still remains untreated, it may advance and
spread below the gum line. The toxins below the gum began to breakdown
the bone supporting the teeth and may completely destroy them. Gums
will separate from the teeth, forming pockets that will become deeper
as more bone and tissue is destroyed. Teeth can become loose.
It is very important that everyone have regular periodontal disease
screenings. Smith Dental Care can help you prevent, detect and treat
